B.Sc.(Env.) ENVS/ENVS:C course conflict for F21
UPDATE as of September 1, 2021: The SES department has now changed the lab time for ENVS*2240*0103 to an evening lab to avoid the scheduling conflict.
This message is for second year B.Sc.(Env.) ENVS or ENVS:C students experiencing a scheduling conflict between ENVS 2240*0103 and ENVS 2030 in F21 semester.
The SES department has been trying to work on a solution for this conflict. I’m not sure whether the department will be able to offer a solution, but I have a few ideas to share:
If you are registered in the conflict (above) or plan to register in the conflict:
- It is important for you to know that instructors are not obligated to provide accommodations due to a scheduling conflict.
- Although my advice is not to stay in the conflict, you can choose to stay in it. You can communicate this to the instructors of ENVS 2030 and ask if they have advice about your potential for success in their course if you choose to remain in the conflict.
- Both ENVS 2240 and ENVS 2030 are required courses for the ENVS/ENVS:C majors and both are only offered in fall semester. They are listed as required courses in the fall semester of second year, but students can choose to take one of them in a future fall semester (instead of staying in the conflict). To decide which one can wait, it is a good idea to look ahead at List D and List C restricted electives that you are really hoping to take to see if either of the two courses are a pre-requisite for planned courses in future semesters. The ENVS/ENVS:C major has so many excellent restricted elective course options that I am optimistic you will be able to come up with a plan where moving one or the other of the required courses works.
- If you move one of the conflicting courses to a future fall semester to avoid the conflict and are looking for a course to take in F21, you can look for a restricted elective or free elective. Physics (List B) is a great choice, as is ENVS 2330 (List A). Some List C options are ENVS 2120, ENVS 2230, ENVS 3020, ENVS 3040, ENVS 3210, ENVS 3230, ENVS 3300, MICR 3220, TOX 2000.
I realize that some courses are full. If you are hoping to be signed into a full course, you can email the instructor to ask whether this is possible. In your email, let the instructor know what program and major you are in and why you want to take the course this fall. Instructors are not obligated to sign students into full courses, but you can ask! If they agree, you will need to send them a course waiver request form for their signature:
Completed forms must be submitted to enrolment services at es@uoguelph.ca for processing before September 17, 2021 (last day to add courses for F21).
